Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is a facility which allows mobile subscribers to retain their mobile number when moving between mobile networks. This means that all mobile customers with an 083, 085, 086 or 087 mobile number can move to a new operator and keep their existing mobile number.

What are the benefits? 
Number portability is about facilitating consumer choice across mobile operators, as it removes the inherent cost of a number change when moving to a new provider. Any number change involves an inherent cost to the user, who would otherwise have to notify friends and family of their new number or re-print cards or stationary. With MNP, consumers can chose to move between operators, where they may get a better deal on tariffs or services with another operator, without incurring the additional cost and inconvenience of a number change. MNP is available to both pre-paid and post-paid subscribers of all Irish mobile operators.

How does it work?
The MNP process has been designed to be as quick and as customer friendly as possible. It is based on a two stage process, where the customer will contact the new operator of their choice to set up their new subscription in the usual manner and have the option to keep their existing number with the new provider. To do this, the customer will be required to provide certain information to their new operator, who will validate their request, to ensure that the process is secure and that the customer making the request is entitled to port that number.

How long will it take?
Most changes should be made within a few hours. The processes are designed to make moving your number to a new network as timely and straightforward as possible.

What does it cost?
There is no direct charge to consumers to move their number to another operator. However, consumers should be aware that they are still liable for any outstanding bills with existing operator and may, in some cases, be subject to contractual obligations.

Tariff Transparency
To ensure customers are aware that they are calling a customer who is on another network (which is no longer apparent by the prefix to the mobile number, ie 085/086/087) you may hear a short tone before the call is connected. This is to advise the caller that the call is 'off-network', and consequently may incur a higher call charge.
